Just follow the tour and read about the nations below while you’re walking. The text that you can read here below is also in the map.

So, get your warm clothing and go for a little walk (around 3km) around the city and get to know the nations!

Universitetshuset

You are standing in front of the university main building. If you have the chance, go inside and have a look at the big hall where traditional ceremonies are held. The university was founded 1477 and is the oldest university in Sweden! The oldest building that you can still visit is the Gustavianum, right between the university main building and the cathedral

Smålands

In terms of size, Smålands, as the name suggests, is one of the smallest nations in Uppsala. Despite its size, it is a very cozy and homey place. The pub is open Tuesday to Friday and is a great place to eat excellent burgers and unwind after a tough day of classes - here you can play boardgames or take part in the weekly pub quiz! If you're an active person, you can attend Latin dance classes on Thursdays. If you're more of an artsy person, you can also be a part of one of Smålands' choirs, orchestra or theatre/spex group. If any of these sound appealing to you, don't hesitate to visit Smålands and ask for more details!

We celebrate Smalands holidays like “fössta tossdagen i mass”  (first thursday in march), where members can eat Princesscake for free and enjoy our glassblaserna orchestra. It’s always a great party. But we also host gasques and Balls every semester and active members can go to our friend nations in Lund and Helsinki to celebrate.

Being active at Smalands opens up new worlds! We have regular “workers lunch”, dinners and sexas (very informal gasques) - this is what being active at Smalands makes it a great experience! You get to know other active people that will easily become your “Uppsala Family”

Interested in working at the pub? Helping the Fika? Working in the library? Famous Flyx (Friday Luxury)? Build something from scratch? Write 3q@smalands.nu or just pop by during the day and say you’re interested!

Fun Fact: Smålands nation is the nation with the oldest bylaws.

Södermanlands-Nerikes

Södermanlands-Nerikes nation, more commonly known as Snerikes, is the oldest student nation in Sweden, and with over 5000 members among the largest in Uppsala.

For Swedish students, Snerikes is the only nation that still requires new members to have a direct connection to Södermanlands or Nerikes county to join. However, this is waived for all international students, which makes Snerikes a very popular choice for internationals.

As one of the largest nations in Uppsala, Snerikes has a vast range of events, clubs and activities. Other than the well known Tuesday nightclub which usually runs during the semester, Snerikes offers a restaurant and pub through the week for dinner, and in the summer, transforms into Uppsala’s most popular summer club Bryggan. On Thursdays, traditional pea soup is served, and a brunch is served on Sundays.

The many restaurants offer a perfect place to work and meet new friends - Take a shift to find out why so many feel Snerikes as our second home, and you don’t need to know any Swedish to join in.

The associations at Snerikes include the oldest student band in the world, Hornboskapen, a mixed gender national choir, Sweden’s first student sports association IF Trikadien, a national theatre and many others.

The nation also has numerous traditional gasques throughout the year, which are the highlight of the semester. The nation does far more than we can list here, visit our website snerikes.se or our office to find out why you should come and join us at the pink castle!

Göteborgs

This is Göteborg’s nation! As you can see, it has an ugly exterior, but they are firm believers that it is the inside that counts. The house has actually been labelled as a cultural landmark, as the house has architectural qualities specific to the 1960’s.

Göteborgs is Uppsalas smallest nation, with about 500 members. Their size enables them to have close-knit friendships with all the active members, and no one is ever just “a part of the crowd”.

The nation’s pub, which the active members describe as their living room, is open Tuesday through Friday, 18-00, and the library is open 9-18 on weekdays.

Uplands

Uplands is the Nation for the Upplands region that includes the city of Uppsala and northern parts of Stockholm. The old house has a resident ghost called Svante Wijkman and he has inspired the names of the nation’s pub (Svantes källaren) and the orchestra (Wijkmanska Blecket). It is a tradition that whoever closes the building at night has to say goodnight to the portrait of Svante in the second floor of the building. The Uplands pub is open Monday through Saturday from 18 to 12(weekdays) or 02 (weekends). The pub is known for its large selection of beers and the beautiful big garden. However, Ebba’s café named after Upland’s first female clubworker, also offers fika, lunch and coffee during the weekdays. (Tues-Fri, 12-17, no nation card required!). As the regional nation of Uppsala, Uplands nation has become a home to many international students. Come by to drink beer, have fika, study, make music with Blecket, meet friends, get involved in our nation but most importantly come and meet amazing people and make new friends!

V-Dala

Västmanlands-Dala nation, or V-Dala as we like to refer to it in every day speech, takes its name and traces its origin from the two Swedish provinces Västmanland and Dalarna. It is one of the oldest nations but was founded as most other student nations during the 17th century. Since then it has been an important and rewarding institution for its members not only from Västmanland and Dalarna but for students from all over the world.

V-Dala’s nation house is designed by the famous architecture from Finland Alvar Aalto. Its size makes it the perfect place to for big dinners, clubs and lots of activities in committees and associations. Some examples of these activities are musical through our orchestra, samba, choir or folk music team, board games, Quidditch, sports (every day of the week!) and chess. Other perks with V-Dala are the nations large amount of student housing and the heart of the nation - the library - where you can loan your course literature or why not some good autumn reading. Our beloved pub is open every day of the week and there you can drink the best alcohol free drinks in town, play board games or just chill with friends.

Kalmar

Kalmar nation’s slogan is “the small nation with the big heart”. It was founded after a dramatic split from Smålands nation. Activities usually offered at Kalmar nation are for example theatre, yoga, floor ball, a mixtape circle, an art circle, a sewing group, and a photo group. Kalmar nation has a large international community so you can join all activities without knowing Swedish.

Kalmar nation has an active live music stage and several famous singers and bands have performed here, for example The National. If you like to perform yourself, Kalmar also hosts open mic nights, when everyone can do whatever they want to do on a stage. Once in a while Kalmar hosts clubs with different concepts, one popular club being “Allmänna Indieklubben”, a club with indie music where everyone gets to vote which song to play next.

A fun fact is that the famous Swedish children’s author Astrid Lindgren, who wrote for example Pippi Longstocking, was an honorary member of Kalmar nation, since she originates from the Kalmar region.

Every autumn Kalmar nation hosts a ball dedicated to the Swedish “ostkaka”, which translated to English is cheesecake, however, a Swedish version of it. During the dinner, this type of cheesecake is served with each of the four courses.

Gotlands

Gotlands nation, technically known as “Gotland’s- and Åland’s Nation”, is the only nation “on the right side of the river”; it’s the only nation that’s geographically bound to the eastern side of Fyrisån.

This is counted as the nation’s official slogan and it makes sense; both Gotland and Åland are islands to the east of Sweden. So, both the nation and the islands are on the right side of everything else.

Like the island's inhabitants, the nation is proud of it’s heritage. There is a wide variety of both Swedish, Gotlandic and Ålandic macro- and microbrewery-beers and the food usually also reflects this fact. Same thing goes with the gasques and traditions e.g. the Lambskullgasque and Gotlandic sports.

This, however, doesn’t mean that it’s exclusive in any way. Most of the members and functionaries aren’t from Gotland or Åland (even though some of course are) and there has been a steadily growing group of international students who have contributed with their own cultural presence, expressions and traditions, e.g. Japanese and Icelandic cafés as well as German and Vietnamese-style pubs.

This is one of the nation’s strengths: it’s quick and easy to become a part of the community in whatever way that suits you. If you’re looking for friends, a place to hang-out or somewhere to study, or party, there’s always something for you and always someone here to hang with.

General info:

  • Founded in 1681 (officially) or 1663 (mentioned)

  • Lambskullgasque (early November) - Lambskulls, homebrewed beer, “lambeye-snaps”

  • Betty’s Pub (open every wed-fri)

  • Jaken’s Café (open every sat-sun)

Norrlands

Societies

Norrlands has a wide range of activities and organizations among which you are sure to find something that suits you! Why not play in one of the jazz orchestras, join a sports team, act with the theater (so called spex) society, or join one of our cultural fraternities or sororities (each with their own background in a specific part of Norrland, often focusing on that part's cuisine and traditions).

During the day:

During the day we offer places to study, a computer hall with computers to borrow, breakfast, lunch and coffee (fika) in Maj's café (Uppsalas student café with the most generous opening hours). Furthermore, we have our own library with a quiet reading places and considerable amount of the course litterature at Uppsala university.

 During the evening

Our pub, Orvar’s krog, opens early every evening. Orvar is the largest nation's pub in Uppsala by far - renowned for good beer, great food and a fantastic atmosphere. Every Wednesday we have our club Hexagon! (short for We play pop-music!) with - of course - free entrance for you as a member. I addition there is the popular evening café each Tuesday, and the occasional Jazz-evening for those who enjoy dancing to a live band. Also, at least once a month, there is a great gask (=traditional students party) where every part of the house stays open and Norrlands is filled with happy students enjoying themselves until 4 o'clock in the morning.

Västgöta

Västgöta nation, or VG as it is often called, is the oldest nation in Uppsala, with the oldest and orangest house. The slogan is “joy above all”, as the nation values community and coziness very high. The nation is mainly known for its restaurant related activities, such as the vegan soup lunch with the best focaccia in Uppsala, which is served every weekday, and the pub Djäknen, located in a medieval potato cellar! If you haven’t been there, you totally should! It also offers a brunch every sunday, and the restaurant, named “Käk” opens its doors a few times a month!

The nation offers a range of cultural activities, such as no less than three choirs, a theatre group, and a newly started sewing group. There is also a lot of work done in the garden, which everyone is welcome to join!

Apart from all this, the nation hosts numerous gasques, such as the song book gasque as well as balls, ladies’ and gentlemens’ dinners, and our specialty, Tiroler Abend and Tirolborg every year! After the gasques, there is a dancefloor and bars.

At VG, there is a home for everyone, and as internationals you’ll get a taste of sweden in the comfort of being surrounded by international and swedish students alike.

Ögtgöta

Welcome to Östgöta nation! This is the 7th biggest nation which basically means that it is big among the smaller ones. This is perfect if you want to meet new people while still getting the community feeling with familiar faces. The nation house is one of the biggest ones and it serves as a second living room, a pub, a café, a club, a study space and home for a lot of culture societies in one. ÖG is the only nation that polishes glasses and cutlery by hand for all of the gasques and we organize about one gasque a month with different themes. For example the Backwards gasque where everything is backwards and you start the dinner with the dessert! The most popular recurring activities are the casual cozy pub and the waffle buffet. As a bonus the nation soon turns 375 years old and the jubilee will be celebrated with a bang.

Founding year: 1646

To do: Work in or visit the pub/café, join the choir or dance group, work behind the scenes or on stage in the spex production, act in the theatre group, hang and play games with the game society, get the blood rushing with the sports club or at the yoga events, write for the newspaper, chill and eat snacks on movie nights.

Gästrike-Hälsinge

Gästrike-Hälsinge Nation, better known as GH, is a middle-sized Nation, close to the river and the law library, with Carolina Rediviva only one hill away.

The current slogan is “Good drinks, good food, and good friends” and you can indeed find them, with the biggest collection of beer, a variety of tap beer options and many drink options along with a delicious homemade burger and always a nice face to greet you. But it does not end there, sports groups practice weekly with Running, Yoga and Frisbee some of them, the Choir has reserved spots for international students and you can join the Boardgames or Testing societies. Clubs are held only for special dates but special DJs are brought.

During summer time you can enjoy the nice garden and when exams arrive you can study in the cozy library. If you love pancakes, you can find them every saturday for brunch at the Pancake Bar and choose between salty and sweet options. Or you can also choose to work at the regular Pub or at the Pancake Bar and have some fun with the working team.

Finally, the best way of meeting members and making new friends is by becoming active or participating in the regular activities, where you will be more than welcomed and invited to get involved. The Nation has a great balance of Swedes and internationals, so you will get to know many Swedes and still stay in an international environment.

Stockholms

Stockholms nation is one of the larger nations in Uppsala. As the name suggests it represents the Stockholm area but students do not need to have a connection to Stockholm to become a member, Stockholm nation is famous for its legendary Thursday clubs during the semester and the affordable lunch during the weekdays. Värmlands

Värmlands nation or just Värmlands is one of the biggest nation in Uppsala with its 3000+ members. The Värmlands slogan is “Welcome in to the warmth” as Värmland is the sunniest county in Sweden but also because the nation may be one of the biggest nation member wise, the house is still very cozy and small. One of the reasons why Värmlands is so popular is because their clubs are on Friday’s with 2 dance floors and 3 bars and when the weather allows they open up their big garden. Värmlands also have a small pub called “Wermlandskällar’n it’s venue is the oldest building in Uppsala being built in the 1200 century.
